có hai vụ: vụ tháng năm và vụ tháng mười. Người làm ruộng hầu hết cả năm dầm
mưa dãi nắng ở ngoài đồng áng. Hết cày bừa, gieo mạ, cấy lúa, lại làm cỏ, tát
nước.

Rice-paddy
fields have two crops: the fifth-month and the tenth-month ones. Almost all
year round, the peasants expose themselves to the rain and sun in the rice
fields. They do the ploughing, harrowing, transplanting, weeding and irrigating
one after another.

Đến
khi lúa chín, gặt về phơi đập thành thóc, xay giã, sàng sảy hết trấu cám, mới
thành được hột gạo. Trải một khoảng thời gian khá dài, góp công lao của bao
nhiêu người, ta mới có cơm ăn, bởi thế ta có câu: “một bát cơm, một chén mồ
hôi”.

When
the paddy is ripe, they reap and bring it home, where they dry, thresh, grind,
husk and winnow it to get rid of the chaff and bran and transform it into a
grain of rice. After a rather long period of time and with the labour
contributed by many people, we get our rice to eat, that is why we have a
saying: “ a bowl or rice, a bowl of sweat”.
